Romance Writer's Word of the Day 9/4/07

Today's Romance Writer's Word of the Day is:

Okay, okay, this word might work even better in fantasy writing, it just sounds fantastic... But considering the currently melding of fantasy and romance, I thought we'd use it here today (and I used it in my Story Sample (answering a Sunday Scribblings prompt) here. So...

Widdershins [widd-er-shins] is an adverb meaning "in a counterclockwise direction."

Find my sample sentence (5th paragraph) here. Also, as a note, when writing fantasy that includes magic/k, understand that direction is mighty important. When something travels "widdershins" it foreshadows the idea that a good spell (like Jennet's circle of protection) may be undone by dangerous forces. I hope that makes sense to you.

Take care!

Just as an extra bit - widdershins is also used to banish negative energy ... extra fodder perhaps :)!

Thank you. In practices I've studied (granted they are very small and specialized ones) widdershins is seldom mentioned or used because it's considered the "unmaker"--Hmm--Which makes sense then to use it as a banisher then. Cool. Must get coffee...

Thanks!
