Daily Word Count

610 words today. I switched things up and wrote a potential query letter for Hollow Hearts and Hollow Hills. It makes me re-examine things and revisit the overview I'm trying for. In short, it makes me think. ;-)

Have a great night!

Query letters are hard, don't you think? Its like another test when you are trying to become a novelist. First you crack the code of how to write a novel that makes sense and has enough pages (a true feat in itself) and then make that interesting (now we are at miracle level). Then you have to figure out the query letter, too.

They certainly can be!

I actually write most query letters well before I get the whole story/novel written. It's like I do my brainstorming, my basic outline, my synopsis and my query, then roll into the heavy-duty writing.

That way I can revisit my original vision and pitch for the story and see how it's grown and changed during the writing. If I don't like the story/novel where it currently is, I can use the synopsis and query as a touchstone to get me back "on base."

I actually took a class on magazine writing (just a "continuing ed" sort of thing) and our teacher spent a whole day on queries. It gave me a good handle on the topic--although queries for novels are definitely different in some ways...
