Romance Writer's Word of the Day 6/29/07

Today's Romance Writer's Word of the Day (for 6/29/07) is:

Capricious.

Capricious [kuh-pree-shu s] is an adjective and means "erratic, fanciful, whimsical, changeable, swayed or swaying (in emotion and behavior) easily."

Here's a sentence:
Her capricious nature always left him wondering what she'd say and do next.

Do you have a character who has a capricious nature?

I don't think I have had a character like that. All mine seem pretty set in their personalities. Unless you count the ones from our group story called The Wake. I didn't create all of them and some were very volatile, but I had to write for them.

No, mine are complex and inconsistent but not capricious. Do you?

I've (unfortunately) known people who are quite set in their personalities, but their personality is (in itself) capricious ;-) .

Considering the characters I'm currently focused(ahem)on writing, I don't have any I'd designate as capricious, but-- I've noted many times when people don't know one another (especially men judging women they haven't spent much time with) well and one will judge the other as capricious or "flighty."

I guess I'd most likely use the word in a similar situation--when someone's not sure of another's motivations and misjudges them as being capricious as a result.

Eh, it basically makes sense to me... ;-)
