This blog follows how a romance novel set in the Borders of medieval Scotland is researched, written and hopefully *hopefully* published.

Thought for the Day 3/8/07

Here's one...

"Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia."
~E.L. Doctorow

I'm sorry--I just love this one, perhaps because I relate to it. What do you think? Does society sort of excuse writers as "quirky?" Do we all inadvertently separate ourselves in order to write?

Always curious about other opinions...

Once I realized all writers are a little crazy, I felt a little more normal.

Of course, since 'craziness' is defined as what is not normal, until there are more writers than not, everyone will think we're crazy.

I prefer to think we're the sane ones, and everyone else is crazy. :-D After all, successful writing requires a better understanding of the world than many people ever achieve.

More seriously, writers are different. No one can really dispute that. A healthy society requires a variety of people with differing talents and traits. The 'curse' of schizophrenia is the fact it's uncontrollable. If writers are able to utilise a controlled form of something similar, which could well be true, is that truly the same? The only way to wring an answer out of the above statements would be to write a story that explored them. :-) Perhaps that's an answer in itself?

Smile, Wandering Author, I do think that writers are the coolest people to know on earth. So, weird or crazy or just different, its all good in my opinion.
