This blog follows how a romance novel set in the Borders of medieval Scotland is researched, written and hopefully *hopefully* published.

Another Quick Diversion...

I just saw this cute posting on Zinnia's site (she's another Novel Racer) that I want to direct you to... Recipe for a Novel.

This is a neat way to reconsider all those things we each put into our writing--How might you create your own novel's "recipe?" I know in the "romance" genre we often hear about "formulas" which I've always thought are tremendously similar to recipes.

I'd try and make this a "challenge" and entice people to try their own version, except that I don't want the additional headache that sort of thing generally appears to entail (thank goodness for those of you who do organize such things!).

So, just think about it... The writing you're currently doing--Can you break it apart into specific ingredients and amounts? If there was a recipe for novel-writing success would you use it?

Honestly, I always stray from recipes and (literally) sniff out what seems to work best ;-) But a reference point (like a recipe should be in my opinion) can be handy... ;-)

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a lovely trail of encouragement behind!!! My bubbly was divine and even though no words have been added to my 50,000 YET due to work, life and...work, life...I am optimistic and itching to get back to it. Best wishes with your word count!!!!! It is both exciting and terrifying writing a first novel isn't it?

Thanks for encouraging words in the comment you left on my blog! I've thought about it and yeah, writing 3k is pretty good going for me.

I'm editing my first novel at the moment and getting ready to submit it soon. It's beyond scary!

Be brave! :-)

What's the quote--"Nothing ventured, nothing gained?" Submitting can be scary (I've done a handful of things in another genre) but what's the worst that'll happen?

Maybe you get rejected--Maybe emotionally crushed at first (been there, done that). If so, pick yourself back up, write some scathing poetry and re-examine a few things about your creation.

Let's face it--fear of the unknown (potential rejection or a potential book deal) is always a powerful way to throw the brakes on our progress. So keep editing. Start looking at publishers you really want to carry your book.

Then make sure you've tweaked it all out to their specs, take a breath and send it out. Then move on. The worst (for me) is waiting.

Start a new project and grow...

PS--Keep me updated on your progress--I'm rooting for you!
